About the Snare Drum
The snare drum or side drum is a melodic percussion instrument. The snare drum evolved from an instrument called tabor, from the Medieval period. It is considered to be one of the most important drums of the drum kit. Historically, snare drums have been used in military bands and parades to produce drum rhythms. Nowadays in popular music, especially with rock drum kits, the snare drum is normally used to play a backbeat pattern.
